Legendary punk artist turned blue chip art star RAYMOND PETTIBON snapped necks this week when his show of new work “Here’s Your Irony Back (The Big Picture)” debuted at DAVID ZWIRNER GALLERY to a packed (and mixed) house of young fans and monied collectors more familiar Black Flag as a brand of pest control than southern California Hardcore. Pettibon’s ascent in the “Capitol–A” art world has been meteoric in recent years with his pen and ink pieces fetching fees in the six figure range and his vintage punk era work being sold at auctions to the sort of clientele the musical movement he so indelibly branded sought to disembowel. Featuring over 80 surprisingly colorful & politically-themed pieces of art, the exhibit was nothing short of a show of force by one of the underground art world’s most enigmatic figures.
