Dirty deeds done by Swedes: Serrano receives his harshest review yet…

Controversial New York-based photographer ANDRES SERRANO saw his solo show, “The History of Sex” destroyed at the hands of vandals (possibly art critics gone wrong?) in Lund, Sweden this week. Shortly before closing last Friday, a group of four masked men armed with axes and crowbars stormed into the KULTUREN GALLERY shouting “We don’t support this shit!” in Swedish and proceeded to smash most of the show’s sexually explicit images and scatter leaflets bearing the decree “Against decadence and for a healthier culture.”  In all, $200,000 worth of work was lost in the melee, and the gallery is working with Serrano to replace the images so that the show, which is scheduled to remain on display until December, can reopen. Amazingly, the entire ordeal was videotaped by one of the raiders and edited to include a metal soundtrack before being posted on YouTube, which quickly pulled the film. No group has yet laid claim to the attack and Swedish police have no leads. Serrano is best known for his ultimately controversial “Piss Christ” photo depicting a crucifix submerged in urine that drew public and political outcry when it debuted in the late 1980s with support from the oft-maligned National Endowment for the Arts…
