FRANCE///RISE OF THE MECHANICAL ANIMALS…

January 30th, 2008

elep7.jpg

In the little known French city of Nantes, a veritable army of mechanical animals is quietly readying itself for the eventual takeover of Western Europe. Well, not really, but it certainly would be cool if the incredible man-made menagerie known as the MACHINES OF THE ISLE OF NANTES currently on display in the port city would rise up and take their rightful place at the top of the foodchain on land & sea. The brainchild of French artists FRANCOIS DELAROZIERE and PIERRE OREFICE, the Mechanical Animal project is an ongoing initiative that began in 2007 with the debut of a massive mobile elephant sculpture over 12 meters tall that can carry 45 puny human passengers on its back—who, in turn, can operate the animal’s trunk and trumpet call themselves—as it walks along city streets. The project’s second stage, a collection of interactive marine life that will populate a massive multi-story carousel, is currently being constructed with a projected debut date of summer 2009. Currently, the entire collection is housed in a beautiful turn-of-the-century warehouse that once served as the city’s shipbuilding hub and is open to the public for viewing daily. LONDON///BAST & JUDITH SUPINE GET BOOBY TRAPPED…

January 29th, 2008

titleee.jpg

Brooklyn boys BAST and JUDITH SUPINE brought their respective brands of unique street art stylings to the old country when their joint show, “Booby Trap” opened at Fogtown’s vaunted LEONARD STREET GALLERY last week. For those in need of some quick catch-up, Bast’s colorful world is one overrun with cartoon characters gone wrong and lewd women gone right while Judith Supine’s vision of twisted human figures is permanently tainted with a trademark radioactive yellow glow. Prone to frequent unauthorized public art “installations,” the boys’ work loses none of its streetwise spontaneity when migrating to the white walls of galleries, a fact clearly evidenced by the rate at which rabid British fans snapped up the duo’s work on opening nite. PARIS///SKWAK LIKE A MANIAC…

January 28th, 2008

skwak2.jpg
Skwak lets out nary a squeek…

Parisian wildcard painter SKWAK pushed the fun factor through the roof when his appropriately named “Born to be a Maniac” opened at Paris’ ADDICT GALERIE the other nite. For those not familiar with the Technicolor stylings of the young Frenchman, Skwak renders meticulously detailed, anatomically correct cartoon character landscapes that look like Aboriginal paintings filtered through the lens of Raw Magazine. Love em or hate em, they’re guaranteed to bring a smile, a bonified rarity in the art world these days. HAVE A LOOK: Read the rest of this entry »

January 25th, 2008

nessie.jpg

Well, we all knew it was going to happen eventually (even if by sheer force of collective will), and now it has: a real monster has finally invaded Tokyo. Check out the following video for proof:

What you just saw was one of the greatest publicity stunts of all time executed with new waterscreen technology in Tokyo Bay this week for the upcoming film, “The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep.” Must. See. Film. Mission accomplished…

HELLBOURNE///NECK FACE IN OZ…

January 25th, 2008

Nasty Neck finds love & beer in Oz…

NASTY NECK FACE unleashed hell in Melbourne last nite when the always-welcoming DON’T COME GALLERY hosted his aptly titled “Hell on Earth” show. Down under hipsters turned out in droves to get a closer look at the Mexican gremlin and his attendant cast of demonic characters, death masks and crime scene photos. Oh yeah, and his equally horrific toenails. HAVE A LOOK: Read the rest of this entry »

UK///BARRY McGEE AT THE BALTIC CENTER…

January 24th, 2008

barrym28.jpg

San Francisco’s BARRY McGEE returned to the BALTIC CENTER in Gateshead, England, for this week’s opening of his first solo show at the progressive UK institution, “They Don’t Make This Anymore.” Featuring new site-specific constructions and some reconfigurations of pieces from his recent large-scale installations, Barry has created a new, massive aesthetic environment on the building’s second floor that includes paintings, animatronic sculpture, an upended truck, drawings (both his and his father’s), bottles, and a collection of sketchbooks. We get the feeling this show represents one of the last looks at this particular thematic chapter of Barry’s career before he brings in a new mode of thought in the coming years. If you’ve got frequent flyer miles, start cashing em in and get out there. HAVE A LOOK: Read the rest of this entry »

January 24th, 2008

kmdv1.jpg

Brooklyn neighbors and comrades-in-arms KAWS and MARK DEAN VECA are long overdue for a full-scale artist collaboration on canvas (come one guys, make it happen), but in the meantime, Mr Veca’s new guest T-shirt graphic for KAWS’ Tokyo-based ORIGINAL FAKE brand featuring his insanely intricate graphic stylings will have to tide us over. Ol’ Chum never looked so good. Make that gross…

NYC///ART HYPE///MR BRAINWASH PERFECTS THE ART OF TURD POLISHING WITH THE OPENING OF “ICONS”

4363964574_0f10031e70_o
What has to be the final nail in the “Street Art” coffin was driven in last weekend by none other than MR. BRAINWASH (aka: “The Christian Audigier of Street Art”) when he opened his massive, self-produced “Icons” show in a rented space (which, ironically, was once a real art gallery, pre-recession) in the heart of Chelsea. As the subject of Brit Street Art king Banksy’s recent docu-parody film, “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” MBW has been the focus of much hype and speculation as his presence finally seeps into the fairly muddy stream of mainstream consciousness. Last week’s Wall Street Journal article articulated this particularly well:
