To celebrate the reopening of groundbreaking gallery SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS in its new location on 1331 W Sunset Blvd this Saturday nite, April 5th, founder SHEPARD FAIREY has chosen none other than Parisian street artist BLEK LE RAT as the subject of the hotspot’s inaugural exhibition. Blek’s “Art is Not Peace but War,” a show of new spraypaint on canvas works by the pioneering artist whose work predates that of followers like Fairey, Banksy, and Nick Walker by over a decade showcases his seminal high contrast iconography in what will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in the US. For all those fans not lucky enough to get their hands on an original (prices range from $9,000–$40,000), Subliminal is making available a set of four black and white prints of Blek’s work as photographed on the street by Sybille Prou, and signed by her, Blek, and the Rat’s frequent co-conspirator, Shepard Fairey for $100 each. The show opens at 8pm, the faithful best start saving their pennies now, and plan to queue up early. ART & COMMERCE///SUPREME x MARILYN MINTER…
March 31st, 2008In yet another puzzling curveball of an artist collab, elite skate brand SUPREME has just announced a new series of boards featuring details of large-scale paintings by one of our favorite photorealistic painters, artist MARILYN MINTER. Releasing in NY & LA Supreme shops on April 10th, on April 12th in Japan, and online on April 17th, the decks represent a new head-scratching alliance for the company because it just makes us wonder, do skaters really want these? Skating’s increasing move towards the highbrow world of couture fashion, bling, and fine art seems in stark contrast to the outlaw sport’s roots and Supreme’s admittedly envelope-pushing collaborations seem to be leading the charge. Don’t get us wrong, Minter is one of the most phenomenal painters of her generation, but does this really make sense to skateboarding culture? For those unfamiliar with Minter, the 60-year-0ld Louisiana born New York artist excels at intensely lifelike photorealistic painting and the former wild girl (minter lost herself in Manhattan’s club scene through the ’70s & ’80s) was the star of 2006’s coveted Whitney Biennial—the New York art world’s most formal stamp of approval—and at the time, some of the artwork from the show appeared on billboards around the city simultaneously. It was a long ways from her days as an artist in the late ’80s when a series of wok based on hardcore porn drew the scorn of art critics and feminists. Now, enjoying the ultimate last laugh, Minter’s art star glows bright in the stratosphere, and apparently, in the skate world’s nite sky too. HAVE A LOOK:

LA///STREET LIFE///SKULLPHONE SPEAKS…
March 31st, 2008
The Barracuda staff proves that life imitates art beneath Skullphone’s warm, digital glow…
Following our earlier report on Supertouch breaking the news that SKULLPHONE had hacked his way into the Clear Channel network to post his iconic skull image onto the network’s LA digital billboard network illegally, WIRED MAGAZINE has reported that it was all a hoax, and that Skullphone actually paid for the ads:
FROM WIRED MAGAZINE:
“The Los Angeles street artist known as Skullphone managed to get his iconic skull-holding-a-cell phone image to display on 10 prominent digital billboards throughout Los Angeles last week  leading some blogs to report that he’d hacked into the signs. Alas, Clear Channel Outdoors, which owns the billboards, says no. “He paid to get it up,” says spokeswoman Jennifer Gery. “It only ran for two days.” Update: Clear Channel’s Tony Alwin is unhappy about the hacking rumors. “The advertisement was bought under the assumption that it was art that was in an art show,” he says. “Any claims about hacking into our systems is false. It’s a lie, even.”
And while we at Supertouch know how to read between the lines (Skullphone’s hack represents the first big breach of the system in what’s certain to become a regular occurrence), Supertouch ally and PAPER MAGAZINE publisher DAVID HERSHKOVITS met up with Skullphone himself late last week to have a few words about the situation:
FROM DAVID HERSHKOVITS/PAPER MAGAZINE:
Finally caught up with Skullphone and had a quick conversation about the brouhaha that’s been stirred up by his tag popping up on 10 digital billboards around LA. Skullphone would neither confirm nor deny Wired’s report that the billboard time was purchased from Clear Channel. The firestorm began when the story was originally reported on Supertouch. I had reported that sources had told me that it was indeed a hack. Here are some sound bites from my conversation with Skullphone:
“The art of hacking I know nothing about. What is hacking? What is art?”
“People thought Bob Dylan sold out when he went electric. I guess people weren’t ready for it.”
“To me it’s American art. The (now digital) billboard on the side of the highway.”
“‘Skullphone digital billboards.’ It was a logical fit.”
“Once again, it’s a matter of semantics. What does it mean to hack the system? Is getting people to think for themselves hacking?”
“Skullphone has a right to be there.”

Tony Oursler’s skull in the woods video projection in New Zealand…
For a while now, we’ve been following the rumors regarding one of our favorite artists, TONY OURSLER, and his mysterious & next level video projections in the countryside of New Zealand at the commission of one of the country’s richest men and now MEN’S VOGUE has an in-depth story on the grandiose & awe-inspiring project. DARKNESS VISIBLE
In Kaukapakapa, New Zealand, a New York artist takes on the biggest, darkest project of his careerâ€â€as well as a larger-than-life patron hell-bent on building himself the most outlandish private art playground on earth.
By DAN HALPERN
There was a 100-foot-tall nude woman, her white shoulders like clouds, rolling around on the hill to our right. Below, on the mudflats coming up to the harbor’s banks, huge eyes and mouths popped out of the wet ground, growling and chirping. To the left, on the trees, a gigantic skull twisted and changed, now human, now simian, now some terrible distortion of a head, a tour of death and birth and evolution all at once.
The American artist Tony Oursler, who was responsible for all thisâ€â€video projected onto the landscapeâ€â€was watching over his creation one evening last November from the deck of the Kaukapakapa country house of Alan Gibbsâ€â€at 68, one of the wealthiest men in New Zealand and one of its leading art patrons. The house itself, overlooking Kaipara Harbour, an hour or so north of Auckland, is a modest enough affair for someone reported to be worth over $450 million, even if little else here is particularly unassuming. A sample fun weekend activity at the Farm: sit inside the caged ball at the top of the world’s largest Tesla coil while several million volts of electricity spin around you before they burst into 40-foot-long lightning bolts. “It’ll knock your socks off,” Gibbs told me a month later, his voice resonating like a pistol shot over the phone. “We’ve all been inside the damn thing: It’s scary as CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE READING…
TOKYO///”MC MURAKAMI” CELEBRATES OPENING OF KAIKAI KIKI GALLERY…
March 23rd, 2008
MC Murakami gives Nigo a run for his monkey…ÂÂ
The de facto headmaster of the Japanese modern art world, aka: TAKASHI MURAKAMI (neé “MC Murakami“) celebrated the forthcoming opening of his flagship company KAIKAI KIKI’s new Motoazabu district gallery in what can only be described as uncharacteristically wild style this weekend at the Rolling Stone Cafe in Tokyo’s upscale Roppongi Hills. With the help of an impressive array of artists, hipsters, fashionistas and A-listers, Takashiâ€â€sporting a fresh new “MC Murakami” look seemingly borrowed from fellow capitalist tastemaker Nigoâ€â€took to the microphone like a carp to a pond and ran the nite’s festivities like a seasoned pro, hosting a dreamy crew of gorgeous fetish girls, CosPlay fanatics, and assorted fun freaks. DJs Jus Ske & Doug Grayson provided the sounds while revelers dug into a sugary art cake and danced to the wee hours. HAVE A LOOK: Read the rest of this entry »
HOLLYWOODLAND///STREET LIFE///SKULLPHONE SKYJACKS LA’S DIGITAL BILLBOARDS…
March 20th, 2008
Skullphone goes digital above Barracuda at 7769 Melrose…
Right now the enigma that is known only as SKULLPHONE is easily Clear Channel Communications‘ greatest enemy in SoCal since he hijacked 10 of the advertising giant’s most prominent digital billboards around LA in Hollywood, Westwood, and the art hotspot of Culver City. Hacking into the billboard’s computer network today, our boy positioned his trademark skullphone imagery in between the array of flashing movie, TV, and auto company ads that make up the normal paid advertising barrage on the giant illuminated monitors. Keep an eye out for more photos to come throughout the day…
