Tobin Yelland’s rough-hewn homage to individuality…
In homage of the uniquely egalitarian spirit of their crossover basketball shoe the Dunk and its original “Be True” ethos, Nike has unveiled the celebratory photo exhibition, “Being True – 22 years of American Youth,” curated by mavens AARON ROSE & EMMA REEVES. Opening on March 27th at Brooklyn’s JOURNAL GALLERY, and on April 3rd at Hollywood’s 144 LAB space, the bi-coastal showcase featured an impressive array of fine art & lifestyle photography and, in the words of the show’s curators, “brought together 22 photographers who’ve used their cameras to capture a moment in time when a subject, completely devoid of pretense, expressed him or herself honestly and truly.” With contributions from such esteemed lensman & women as Terry Richardson, Jamel Shabazz, Cheryl Dunn, Tim Barber, Angela Boatwright, Kenneth Capello, Poppy de Villeneuve, Naomi Harris, Alex Hoerner, Drew Jarrett, Alain Levitt , Jeaneen Lund, Ari Marcopoulos, Dan Murphey, Jason Nocito, Patrick O’Dell, Mike Piscitelli, Ray Potes, David Ransone, David Perez Shadi, Brent Stewart, and Tobin Yellend, the openings drew a predictably impressive who’s-who of hipsters and art stars, separated only by radically different springtime climates.
