NEWS///SOUNDS///RIAA STOPS SUING MUSIC DOWNLOADERS

When music downloading is outlawed, only outlaws will download music…

Struggling tech-unsavvy single mothers everywhere can now rejoice in the news that their rent check is secure with the RIAA’s announcement that it will finally put an end to the legal assault against music downloaders. The Recording Industry Association of America’s hugely-unsuccessful series of lawsuits—35,000 and counting since 2003, to be exact—has done nothing to abate the illegal sharing of music and other media files online and in a string of highly publicized early instances intended to frighten consumers, the organization managed to nearly bankrupt several families who were totally unaware of their technologically-advanced offspring’s online activities. The organization hasn’t given up altogether, though, as the RIAA has also announced that it will instead focus its anti-piracy efforts on Internet service providers (ISPs) who allow the files to be traded over their lines in the first place. Under the new plan, the RIAA will contact ISPs when illegal uploading is detected. It will then be the duty of individual ISPs to contact offending customers with a notice that would ultimately be followed by a reduction or cessation of service. While the organization won’t disclose which ISPs they’re collaborating with, the RIAA has stated that it won’t require ISPs to reveal the identities of offending individuals. It has, however, reserved the right to pursue legal action against the most notorious up/downloaders. Perhaps the RIAA’s first order of business under the new plan should be to monitor the online activity of Metallica.

NEWS///POLITIKS///M.I.A. TALKS TERRORISM

February 2nd, 2009

Portrait of M.I.A by Greg Gossel from The Shooting Gallery’s upcoming Grammy art show in LA…

This year she’s been nominated for a Grammy and an Oscar, but musician & artist (her first solo show was in 2001 in London) M.I.A. has more pressing issues on her mind, namely the nearly totally unreported genocide currently being perpetrated in her homeland of SRI LANKA where she’s officially been labeled a “terrorist” by the government (to her credit, she was denied entrance to the US by the Bush administration under the same classification). In an interview with favorite ST news site THE DAILY BEAST, the currently preggers and nearly ready-to-pop singer declared: “The situation is systematic genocide, ethnic cleansing … “I want my fans to know I’m not tryin’ to be like Bono. Someone Irish talking about what’s going on in Africa. I actually come from there and the fact is that this is happening now. The war has been going on for a long time, but it stepped into the genocide bracket recently with the new President. I lived in Sri Lanka when the campaign for ethnic cleansing started and if I could stop it and see the end of it in my lifetime that would be amazing. I can’t justify my success otherwise. I can’t justify getting nominated for an Oscar or a Grammy, that to me wouldn’t mean anything if I don’t actually get to speak about this. It’s not like I’m trying to sell records, I’m trying to stop the death of 350,000 people this month.” Click HERE to read more…

WTF?!? FILES///POLITIKS///THE OBAMAS GET WAXED

February 2nd, 2009

Apparently smoothing out the crow’s feet is not an option…

Wasting no time following BARACK OBAMA’s inauguration, purveyors of ultra-creepy celebrity likenesses MADAME TUSSAUDS got down to the business of immortalizing the first couple in the time-honored and forever freaky medium of wax. Barack’s already made his debut at the institution’s Washington D.C. branch to the horror of several infants attending the unveiling, while first lady MICHELLE is still being sculpted in London’s Merlin Studios in preparation for her March debut. Unfortunately, she won’t be joining her man in his Oval Office setting; instead she’ll be placed in line with the museum’s other first ladies, right next to now-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton…

Possibly the only person in the entire world not trying to meet Barack, even a wax one…

NYC///ART HYPE///MR BRAINWASH PERFECTS THE ART OF TURD POLISHING WITH THE OPENING OF “ICONS”

What has to be the final nail in the “Street Art” coffin was driven in last weekend by none other than MR. BRAINWASH (aka: “The Christian Audigier of Street Art”) when he opened his massive, self-produced “Icons” show in a rented space (which, ironically, was once a real art gallery, pre-recession) in the heart of Chelsea. As the subject of Brit Street Art king Banksy’s recent docu-parody film, “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” MBW has been the focus of much hype and speculation as his presence finally seeps into the fairly muddy stream of mainstream consciousness. Last week’s Wall Street Journal article articulated this particularly well:

If ever there was a time to celebrate, it is now. HAVE A LOOK:

By now it’s no secret that JEFFREY DEITCH is closing shop in downtown NYC to head West for the sunnier confines of the MoCA Director’s office, starting June 1st. That leaves SHEPARD FAIREY’s upcoming portrait show as the farewell exhibition at one of the city’s most legendary and influential commercial art institutions in the city’s history.
