One of the fashion world’s foremost visionary designers and couture fine artists ALEXANDER McQUEEN was found dead today in his London apartment, an apparent suicide just days after the death of his mother, and the suicide of one of his close friends Isabella Blow, who discovered the young designer and helped forge his early career:

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN IN APPARENT SUICIDE AFTER THE DEATH OF HIS MOTHER
David Brown, Sadie Gray and Laura Pitel | TIMES ONLINE

The British fashion industry lost one of its brightest stars yesterday with the apparent suicide of Alexander McQueen, who was found hanged at his Central London home.

The designer, 40, had been grieving over the death of his mother, Joyce, who died on February 2. He had been due to attend her funeral today.

The loss of one of the most commercially successful and respected British designers has cast a pall over next week’s London Fashion Week. Friends said that he had been under pressure to complete his autumn/winter women’s wear collection for next month’s launch in Paris. One of his lines, McQ, was due to be shown at New York Fashion Week yesterday but was cancelled. The designer was also known to be upset that a recent relationship had ended.

McQueen recently described the suicide of his mentor — the style icon Isabella Blow — as “the most important thing he had learnt in fashion”. During a newspaper interview conducted by his mother, McQueen was asked what was his most terrifying fear. He replied: “Dying before you.” Click HERE to continue reading…

FASHION///RYAN McGINLEY CELEBRATES LEVIS x OPENING CEREMONY

February 10th, 2010

Photographer RYAN McGINLEY has been keeping busy with beautiful, high-profile corporate work lately (see his visual tribute to the 2010 winter Olympics), and his photo essay and short film celebrating the new LEVIS x OPENING CEREMONY collab is a prime example. The legendary denim brand has laid dormant on the creative culture side of things for some time now, but under the leadership of new marketing director CHRISTIAN PARKES, Levis is now poised to reassert itself in a culture it has always been an organic part of in the coming years.

TECH///GOOGLE ANNOUNCES PLANS TO BUILD HIGH SPEED BROADBAND NETWORK 100 TIMES FASTER THAN CURRENT SYSTEM

February 10th, 2010

Screen shot 2010-02-10 at 9.19.16 PM

Hot on the heels of the release of Buzz, its new social networking app, GOOGLE has announced its plans to build an experimental, ultra high speed broadband network that will ultimately lay waste to the current network as we know it:

“Imagine sitting in a rural health clinic, streaming three-dimensional medical imaging over the web, and discussing a unique condition with a specialist in New York. Or downloading a high-definition, full-length feature film in less than five minutes. Or collaborating with classmates around the world while watching live 3D video of a university lecture. Universal, ultra high-speed Internet access will make all this, and more possible. We’ve urged the FCC to look at new, and creative ways to get there in its National Broadband Plan – and now we’re announcing an experiment of our own.

Google is planning to build, and test ultra-high speed broadband networks in a small number of trial locations across the country. We’ll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We’ll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000, and potentially up to 500,000 people.

As a first step, we’re putting out a Request for Information (RFI) to help identify interested communities. We welcome responses from local government, as well as members of the public.

Our goal is to experiment with new ways to help make Internet access better, and faster for everyone. Here are some specific things that we have in mind:

• Next generation apps: We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it’s creating new bandwidth-intensive “killer apps” and services, or other uses we can’t yet imagine.

•New deployment techniques: We’ll test new ways to build fiber networks, and to help inform and support deployments elsewhere, we’ll share key lessons learned with the world.

• Openness and choice: We’ll operate an “open access” network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. And consistent with our past advocacy, we’ll manage our network in an open, non-discriminatory, and transparent way.”

NYC///ART HYPE///MR BRAINWASH PERFECTS THE ART OF TURD POLISHING WITH THE OPENING OF “ICONS”

4363964574_0f10031e70_o
What has to be the final nail in the “Street Art” coffin was driven in last weekend by none other than MR. BRAINWASH (aka: “The Christian Audigier of Street Art”) when he opened his massive, self-produced “Icons” show in a rented space (which, ironically, was once a real art gallery, pre-recession) in the heart of Chelsea. As the subject of Brit Street Art king Banksy’s recent docu-parody film, “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” MBW has been the focus of much hype and speculation as his presence finally seeps into the fairly muddy stream of mainstream consciousness. Last week’s Wall Street Journal article articulated this particularly well:
