"El Barto" kickflips the leap of faith...
One of the skate world's best-kept secrets is the ultra-collectible but hard to find SKATE BOOK. A 350+ page hardcover "mag," from the minds of skaters SALMAN AGAH and MIKE BALLARD, the refreshingly formatted quarterly periodical is a welcome departure from the copycat skate mags that could once call themselves cutting-edge. Featuring beautiful photography and in-depth articles, Skate Book embraces several themes and riders per issue, delving deep into each in a timeless manner befitting the magazine's hard cover status. Volume 3 is a must-have featuring lengthy profiles on OG pro and Supertouch homie LANCE MOUNTAIN, vintage skate stickers, and cover boy BART SIMPSON who was illustrated especially for the issue in a series of spreads depicting "El Barto" ripping hard across legendary SoCal spots like Carlsbad, Hollywood High, and the Sunset Carwash Gap. Available for the bargain price of $19.95, you can find copies in person at BARRACUDA LA, or online HERE (subscriptions are only $49.95 for 4 issues). Meanwhile, HAVE A LOOK: Read More
Hong Kong Sneaker and vinyl fetishists were on cloud nine last week when hoometown art hero MICHAEL LAU opened his "Crazy Force 1" art show at MICHAEL GALLERY. A collaborative project between the seminal toymaker's "Crazy Children" series and NIKE SPORTSWEAR's "1World" Air Force 1 program, the show featured a shoe box-like interior printed with Lau's "padded cell" print with artwork by Lau visible only through Swoosh-shaped cutouts in the wall. In the far corner of the room stood the artist's life-sized "Crazy Force" character solo in a corner. Of course no proper collab would be complete without to-die-for limited-edition product and Lau did not disappoint in offering fans a signature Nike Air Force 1 sneaker with an upper constructed of his quilted "padded cell" leather and a pocket-sized version of his "Crazy Force" character. Needless to say, supplies sold out in seconds and Lau's reputation as the king of the game remained undefeated. HAVE A LOOK: Read More
Legendary skate company SANTA CRUZ SKATEBOARDS has paid grand homage to underground art world godfather ROBERT WILLIAMS with their new "Malicious" series of signature decks for OG pros ERIC DRESSEN, TOM KNOX, JASON JESSEE, and KEITH MEEK that harkens back to a bygone era of gnarly skating at its finest. Culled from some of Williams' most iconic oil paintings of the same era, including "Meat of Love," "Snuff Fink," "Planet skinner," and "Hot Rod Race," the four deck series marks Williams' first major graphic appearance in the skate world since his introduction in the pages of THRASHER 20 years ago. True believers should keep their eyes peeled for a show of new work by the master imagist at NYC's starmaking TONY SHAFRAZI GALLERY in late 2009.

Speaking of design nerds, one would be hard-pressed to be counted among the ranks of the typographic elite without this sand-cast 6 1/2 lb aluminum AMPERSAND SCULPTURE by Delaware's own HOUSE INDUSTRIES on your shelf as a badge of honor. The perfect accessory for hurtling across the room during a domestic dispute or simply as a weight in a pillowcase to beat back escaped convicts with, the glory that is this sexily rendered ampersand (even the word is sexy) is the perfect gift for that font fanatic in your life. Or, if it's used in the aforementioned pillowcase, to remove them from it.
