Lance inspects his Kenny Scharf-designed Trek TTX time trial bike (sans art wheels for now) with legendary coach Johan Bruyneel…

Stationed in Venice, Italy for the kickoff of this year’s GIRO D’TALIA on Saturday, Supertouch buddy LANCE ARMSTRONG has just gotten his new KENNY SCHARF and SHEPARD FAIREY-designed TREK art cycles up and running and ready to hit the hills in the grand tour’s epic centennial run. The 2009 Giro d’Italia celebrates the race’s 100 year legacy—from Ganna to Contador—with a spectacular and unexpected route. It lacks the massive, mythical mountain passes and its final stage ends in the south for the first time in years. Riders will visit all of Italy’s great cities including Venezia, Trieste, Milano, Torino, Firenze, Bologna, Napoli and Roma, and delivers deceptively difficult stages in the second half of the event. Stay tuned to ST for updates throughout the three-week run…

NEWS///THE MAKING OF LANCE ARMSTRONG’S SHEPARD FAIREY-DESIGNED TREK MADONE

May 5th, 2009

Creating SHEPARD FAIREY’s new TREK MADONE racing cycle for LANCE ARMSTRONG’s run in this month’s GIRO D’ITALIA was no easy task. Luckily, Trek artist SHANE SIEDSCHLAG is nice with a blade and a decal sheet…

When pressed about Shep’s new bike in Rome today, Lance told an AP reporter: “I’m a fan of his artwork. I collect his artwork. The bike that he did for this race I think is pretty stunning.”

PARIS///MUST SEE SHOW///DUANE HANSON AT GALERIE EMMANUEL PERROTIN

May 3rd, 2009

Pioneering “Hyperrealist” artist DUANE HANSON spent a lifetime perfecting his totally lifelike human sculptures before cancer claimed his life at age 71 in 1996. Now, in homage to the great renderer of the everyman, GALERIE EMMANUEL PERROTIN is presenting an incredible collection of some of the artist’s best work, representing everyone from skater kids to construction workers in their epic new Rue Turenne space in Paris’ 4th arrondissement. Hanson cast his sculptures from live subjects and fabricated them using fiberglass and resin, allowing for utterly lifelike detail. Thematically, Hanson was concerned with the man on the street and sought to portray the marginalized members of society he saw around him every day: “People, workers, the elderly, all these people I see with sympathy and affection. These are the people who have fought the battle of life and who now and then show the hard work and the frustration … It’s all about human activity, it’s truth, and we all get there.” As the home to Lance Armstrong’s upcoming anti-cancer “Stages” art show benefiting the Livestrong foundation this July 16th, Perrotin’s incredible exhibition provides the perfect prelude illustrating the career of an artist working at the peak of his craft when his life was so tragically ended by a disease still not fully understood. Hanson’s work remains on display until July 11th, don’t miss it. HAVE A LOOK: Read the rest of this entry »

ITALY///SNEEK PEEK: LANCE ARMSTRONG’S SHEPARD FAIREY & KENNY SCHARF ART BIKES FOR THE GIRO d’ITALIA 2009

May 3rd, 2009

Here we have the very first sneek peek at LANCE ARMSTRONG’s newly completed Supertouch-curated TREK art bikes for his run in the upcoming GIRO d’ITALIA by artists SHEPARD FAIREY and KENNY SCHARF. The world’s most prestigious cycling stage race after the legendary Tour de France, the Giro is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2009, coincidentally the first year Lance has ever entered the race. Lending their formidable creative talents to the challenge, Shepard and Kenny created two vastly different and utterly unique cycles to draw attention to Lance’s upcoming NIKE-backed “STAGES” anti-cancer art show benefiting LIVESTRONG that will debut on July 16th in Paris at GALERIE EMMANUEL PERROTIN during the TDF. Getting up on Lance’s “daily driver” Trek Madone road bike, Shepard Fairey created a vibrant homage to Lance’s cancer fighting foundation while including ancient patterning in homage of Italy’s rich architectural details. NYC Pop Art legend Kenny Scharf took a totally different approach to Lance’s Trek TTX time trial cycle and created the “lightspeed” space bike that will hopefully hurtle Tex across the finish line in record time. Both bikes will be auctioned off on October 2nd (10/2 marks the date of Lance’s original cancer diagnosis) at the NYC stop of the “Stages” art tour with all proceeds going to benefit Livestrong. Look for detailed official photos of both bikes here on ST in the next few days. Meanwhile, ENJOY THE PEEK: Read the rest of this entry »

PARIS///NEWS///LANCE ARMSTRONG’S CALL TO ARTISTIC ACTION FOR “STAGES”

April 27th, 2009

As part of the Supertouch-curated “STAGES” anti-cancer art show set to debut in Paris during this year’s TOUR DE FRANCE, LIVESTRONG founder LANCE ARMSTRONG has sent a call out to cancer survivors who want to be immortalized in one of the show’s artworks to submit their personal data by this Friday, April 1st, by clicking HERE. A world-class artist who shall remain nameless until the show’s debut on July 16th at the esteemed GALERIE EMMANUEL PERROTIN will be creating an original work incorporating the names of hundreds of cancer survivors which will hang alongside new works by such participating artists as Cai Guo-Qiang, Ed Ruscha, Taryn Simon, Shepard Fairey, Richard Prince, Rosson Crow, Raymond Pettibon, KAWS, Eric White, Barry McGee, Christopher Wool, Marc Newson, Catherine Opie, and Os Gemeos, to name a few. Produced by NIKE as a benefit for the LIVESTRONG foundation, the show was conceived to engage the global creative community in a greater dialogue about the imminent threat posed by the cancer burden and the organization’s ultimate message of survivorship—the core reason behind Lance’s return to the sport in 2009. Keep an eye on ST for more “Stages” updates coming soon, and if you’re a cancer survivor, don’t forget to drop your name HERE by April 1st!

NEWS///LANCE ARMSTRONG DISCUSSES THE “STAGES” ART SHOW WITH THE LA TIMES

March 9th, 2009

LANCE ARMSTRONG IS A SHOW-STOPPER IN HOLLYWOOD
By Diane Pucin, LA Times, March 8, 2009

“Ben Stiller did the introductions and newly hot artist Shepard Fairey did a mural, but Lance Armstrong was the star Saturday night at the Ricardo Montalban Theater in Hollywood.

As part of his cycling comeback, Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner, has made clear that he is riding not only to win more races but also to raise more money for his cancer charity, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.
Armstrong is flying Sunday to Europe in advance of the third race in his comeback journey, the Milan-San Remo Classic. But on Saturday, Armstrong rode 2.2 miles with about 700 recreational cyclists and then spoke to an enthusiastic audience of art and cycling lovers.

Fairey has gained recent attention for his creation of the Barack Obama “Hope” image, and there was a Fairey-created mural celebrating Armstrong’s cycling comeback and cancer-fighting commitment painted on the side of the theater.

Stiller introduced Armstrong by making a joke about how when the two of them walk down the street, people stop to marvel at Armstrong’s ability to inspire awe because of his cycling accomplishments after recovering from cancer, and then they stare at Stiller and say, “Thunder, man,” because of Stiller’s starring appearance in the less-than-esoteric movie comedy “Tropic Thunder.”

More than 20 artists have created works that will be displayed beginning July 16 at the Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery in Paris and will be sold with the proceeds going to Armstrong’s foundation. Besides Fairey, other notable artists participating in this fundraiser include Tom Sachs, Eric White, Marc Newson, Os Gemeos and Taryn Simon.” Click HERE to continue reading

To officially launch the LIVESTRONGStages” benefit art show (full details below) powered by NIKE that will debut during LANCE ARMSTRONG’s run in this year’s TOUR DE FRANCE, an epic kickoff celebration was held on Saturday nite at Nike’s MONTALBAN THEATER in the heart of Hollywood. The evening began with a massive public charity ride from Children’s Hospital—after Lance spent part of the day visiting with pediatric cancer patients—to the theater where he then took the stage to formally announce the charity art show with the help of BEN STILLER, Nike’s MARK PARKER, Livestrong CEO DOUG ULMAN, and SHEPARD FAIREY. Speaking before a packed house of loyal yellow-clad followers and Livestrong soldiers, Lance eloquently detailed his plan to expand the global scope of cancer awareness through his return to professional cycling and engaging the creative community more closely in the battle with “Stages.” Closing out the nite was surprise musical guest BEN HARPER who performed a full set with his new band THE RELENTLESS SEVEN before a truly stunned crowd. Exhibited throughout the venue were Lance’s new TREK “art bikes” designed by BARRY McGEE and KAWS, as well as his twin Tour of California cycles, most notably the now-infamous stolen time trial bike. Onlookers crowded around displays of Nike’s stunning new NSW Livestrong gear (proceeds from the sale of which go directly to Livestrong) that included offerings by artists MISTER CARTOON and FUTURA, and mingled with some of the “Stages” artists in attendance like ROSSON CROW, ERIC WHITE, and Mr. Fairey (who might have signed more autographs than Lance by night’s end). Keep an eye on Supertouch for more exclusive details on the show coming soon. Meanwhile, HAVE A LOOK: Read the rest of this entry »

NYC///ART HYPE///MR BRAINWASH PERFECTS THE ART OF TURD POLISHING WITH THE OPENING OF “ICONS”

4363964574_0f10031e70_o
What has to be the final nail in the “Street Art” coffin was driven in last weekend by none other than MR. BRAINWASH (aka: “The Christian Audigier of Street Art”) when he opened his massive, self-produced “Icons” show in a rented space (which, ironically, was once a real art gallery, pre-recession) in the heart of Chelsea. As the subject of Brit Street Art king Banksy’s recent docu-parody film, “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” MBW has been the focus of much hype and speculation as his presence finally seeps into the fairly muddy stream of mainstream consciousness. Last week’s Wall Street Journal article articulated this particularly well:
