Supertouch’s own resident tattoo genius SCOTT CAMPBELL will be unveiling his first major American solo show on April 11th when “Make it Rain” opens its doors at O.H.W.O.W. GALLERY in Miami. A bona fide artist-of-all-trades, Campbell will be showcasing his unique aesthetic via sculptures, paintings, drawings and photography, a sneek peek of which we see here today.

Scott Campbell was born and raised in a fishing camp, perched alongside a muddy bayou in rural Louisiana. With a clever knack for drawing and a fondness of stories, he began his career by doing illustration and assistant editing. Curiosity soon led him to experiment with tattooing and his immediate mastery of the art was undeniable. After a subsequent 18-month stint in Spain honing his craft, he packed up his skills and his tattoo machines and traveled for the next 5 years taking inspiration from the art and folklore of tattoo cultures all over the world.

In 2004, he opened Saved Tattoo in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  Since then, it has grown to be the East Coast’s premier tattoo shop with a devout following of celebrity clientele.  Campbell has the taken the blue collar grit and lore of tattoo culture and extracted a visual language and wit that are supremely refined and deliberate. He has an uncanny ability to tell a story with any medium, flesh or otherwise.

Recently, Campbell has been featured in group exhibitions at the Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Centre in Greece, the Massimo Carasi gallery in Milan, Italy, Colette in France, Moeller Snow Gallery in New York, and O.H.W.O.W. in Miami during Art Basel Miami Beach.

Rabid KAWS fanatics are literally counting the hours till the Brooklyn-based Pop phenomenon opens the doors to his new solo show “The Long Way Home,” at HONOR FRASER gallery in LA on SATURDAY NITE, FEBRUARY 21st. Featuring an incredible array of new paintings and sculptures, the exhibition is a real stylistic breakthrough for the artist and promises some good surprises for longtime fans who thought they’d seen it all. Otaku toy collectors are rejoicing at the upcoming joint show at Tokyo hotspot STITCH between TIM BISKUP and mad scientist Japanese designer T9G (Ta-Ku-Ji) whose wild remixes of each other’s iconic figures are poised to single-handedly breathe new life into the slumping vinyl toy genre. Dubbed the “T x T Project,” the show will also feature a colorful array of brand new Tim Biskup Kaiju paintings alongside the release of several incredibly rare production vinyl toys and art prints created especially for the occasion. Following up on our previous sneek peek at one of MARK DEAN VECA’s new wall paintings for his retrospective show opening this Thursday, January 29th at the UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY/UCSD, we’ve got a first look at the show’s new interior “lounge” freshly painted by MDV himself. Providing a comprehensive overview of the Shreveport, Louisiana native & current Altadena resident’s creative oeuvre, “Mark Dean Veca: Painting, Wall Drawings and Collaborations” chronicles the diversity of the painter’s career from his early drawings and monochrome paintings to his creative collaborations with Nike, KAWS, Ford, and Burton Snowboards, before arriving at a selection of the artist’s stunning new work. The show will feature two intensely detailed wall paintings indoors & out exhibiting his signature style of graphic assault. The legend of RAYMOND PETTIBON looms large in the psyche of Southern California music and art culture, but few figures have proven easier to get close to than this enigmatic and elusive artist. Renowned for his stark, minimalistic, text heavy black & white ink drawings that would become an integral part of the visual lexicon of 1980s hardcore music, Pettibon has in recent years expanded his repertoire to include deeply layered color work that oftentimes incorporates elements of collage. This evolution of Pettibon’s vision is the focus of “Cutting Room Floor Show: Part II,” a massive exhibition of new work debuting this Saturday nite at the venerable REGEN PROJECTS GALLERY in West Hollywood that serves as a counterpoint to his recent show there of vintage ’70s & ’80s work. Having transformed the gallery space in recent weeks into a giant makeshift studio, Pettibon has very quietly been putting the finishing touches on literally hundreds of pieces of art in record time. Working tirelessly in the gallery at SoCal’s BEN MALTZ GALLERY at OTIS COLLEGE for the better part of a month now is painter MARK DEAN VECA, whose epic “Phantasmagoria” installation opens this Saturday, October 11th. Armed with an arsenal of paintbrushes and indentured servants, Mr. Veca’s been coating the interior with an ocean of day-glo orange paint and his trademark hyper-detailed paintings that fit into the elaborate filigree of the wall treatments. Focusing on subjects like Damien Hirst’s notorious Diamond Skull, KAWS’ indelible XX-eyed Companions, Buddha, David, Abe Lincoln, and even Jeff Koons’ chrome bunny rabbit, the artist has created a deeply psychedelic view of Postmodern Pop Culture as viewed through his unique graphic kaleidoscope. Supertouch buddy and perennial favorite KAWS marks his formal return to the gallery world after years of building an enviable toy and clothing empire with collaborators MEDICOM TOY and his own brand ORIGINAL FAKE with “Saturated,” a new series of mostly large-scale paintings at Miami’s GALERIE EMMANUEL PERROTIN. Sponsored by musician/ collector/dedicated patron Pharrell, the show debuts a new series of Spongebob Squarepants-themed images that pay homage to his animation industry roots and seem to be a mirror for the artist’s own range of emotional expressions, especially when working on his stress-fueled schedule of never-ending deadlines that occupy the majority of his waking (and non) hours. KAWS’ most ardent art stalker Pharrell gets his opening nite wardrobe ready…

Putting a nice cap to a typically balmy LA summer is the phenomenal retrospective of landmark 1980s drawings by seminal punk artist RAYMOND PETTIBON at West Hollywood’s REGEN PROJECTS opening this weekend. Culled from both the artist’s personal archives and the gallery’s collection of vintage work, the art presented here covers the years 1979—1989, Pettibon’s most fertile and landmark period. It was during this time of economic and social upheaval in the Southland that Pettibon’s iconic style was set in stone and he began illustrating Black Flag’s album covers and show flyers, putting an indelible visual stamp on the erupting hardcore punk movement that would define the sound of the era.
